The purpose of this paper is to provide a general understanding of the anatomy of a Web based attack and to examine some of the factors that have influenced a shift toward this type of attack over the last year. As we have monitored the threat landscape throughout 2008 and into in the early part of 2009, we observed many new techniques and trends based around Web activity, the most significant of which are listed in the table below.
The Web has become an important part of home and work life.
Malware authors are leveraging this fact to deliver attacks via the Web for financial gain rather than personal fame. This paper examines some of the more popular attack techniques and outlines some best practices for being safe online.
